Don’t Wait for the Green Light!
For 20 years I spent summers and breaks researching, writing, editing, and dreaming about publishing my Dad’s family story. When I contacted publishers, I became discouraged. I was told the book was too personal, too regional. Encouraged by Ellen Crain, Director of the Butte Montana Archives, to self-publish, I was initially worried. An earlier Butte author told me about his self-published book that sat in his garage. When I saw a beautifully self-published poetry book by Ann Cogswell, I contacted Sweetgrass Publishing. The process, the people, and the experience were exciting. My photo and an article on my book were on the front page of the Montana Standard, Butte’s daily, and another article was in the paper prior to two book signings in Butte, MT. The Helena Montana Book Company noted my book published in August 2014 was one of the 10 best-selling books of 2014. I met cousins who had mailed me family information despite the fact my father never even knew of them. This was a blast! Don’t wait for the green light.
